Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Madam,

I am exhilarated to inform you that I have been selected for the IRCC certification in University of Toronto and my training will be starting from January 2027. To complete this course, I need to travel to Canada thus I am planning to work for six months in our head office.

As my university campus is only few steps away from our head office location in Toronto and my class schedule is fixed for two weekdays only, therefore, I can work in our head office location. Furthermore, according to the visa requirements, I can work up-to 40 hours a week to support my financial expenses thus I believe it will not only help me to cover my expenses by earning but will also allow me to remain in touch with candidates whose files I am already processing.

For submission of my current files, I can allocate my candidate list to our admissions officer and interview preparations can be managed by receptionist well. I assure that the tuition fee payments for received offer letters will be done on time as I will stay in touch with my students too.

I would be thankful if you could get approval from company's director for my work schedule there for six months and can arrange my accommodation as well.

Thanks in advance.

Yours faithfully,

Rajwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for the request (the IRCC certification), provide a logical plan for how your current workload will be managed by colleagues, and include a polite request for assistance with the director's approval and accommodation. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands both the necessity of your request and the feasibility of your plan. You have maintained a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'therefore', and 'thus' to link your ideas. While the transition between the second and third paragraphs is smooth, the overall structure is logical and professional. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the explanation of the plan, and the final request, meeting the requirements for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'exhilarated', 'allocate', and 'tuition fee payments'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'earning' instead of 'earning a salary' or 'receptionist well' which is slightly awkward. However, these do not impede communication. You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to your job and the university course, which adds precision to your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on more natural collocations and slightly more sophisticated phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'in University of Toronto' (should be 'at the University of Toronto') and 'company's director' (should be 'the company's director'). Additionally, 'up-to' should not be hyphenated. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free and the meaning is always clear. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong, which supports the formal tone of the letter.
