Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I am writing this letter to request six months of transfer to New Zealand Head Office, to gain exposure in a new work environment.
I wish to work at New Zealand head office, because I feel that I can perform better working in different work environment, mainly because I get to experience different culture and get the chance to work with people currently working on higher managerial position. Moreover, I will get a chance to live in metropolitan city like Auckland, wherein many of my relatives already reside.
I am planning to delegate work to my team, as they are fully trained to look after any problem that comes during the project. On top of that I will be supervising teams collaboration and co-ordination in order to complete the projects timely and cost-effectively.
I would need your help in planning the necessary dates and timeline for project completion and my head office moving procedure. Furthermore, I would need your assistance in guiding me about the work culture and work procedures about this new place.
Thank you so much for consideration. Hoping to hear back from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Adam Jacobs

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the motivation for the transfer, propose a viable solution for managing your current workload through delegation, and request specific assistance from your manager. The tone is appropriate for a professional request. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details regarding the 'projects' or the 'work culture' you wish to learn, which would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your request easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On top of that', and 'Furthermore' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural and varied, rather than relying on standard linking words at the start of every paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using professional terms like 'delegate', 'supervising', and 'metropolitan'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'six months of transfer' (better: 'a six-month transfer') and 'work culture and work procedures about this new place' (better: 'work culture and procedures at the head office'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations would enhance the professional tone of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'different work environment' (should be 'a different work environment') and 'teams collaboration' (needs an apostrophe: 'team's'). Additionally, 'Thank you so much for consideration' is missing an article ('your consideration'). Despite these small errors, your control over grammar is generally strong and supports the overall clarity of your message.
