Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Chris,

I am writing to express my interest to work in the head office of the company in Canada for six months

MY name is Nardeep Kaur, I have been working in the sales department for five years. Gathering foreign work experience is the primary reason, why I would like to work in other country. With that experience, I would be able to perform various meetings with the head offices of other countries, as this experience will not only enhance my communication skill, but also help me to make strong professional network.

During this time period, other team members will perform my daily task. Moreover, I discussed all my on going projects with the team members, and I will also provide them assess to my computer system. So, they can get details related to any project, if needed, during my absence.

I will be highly appreciated, if you will provide me reference letter and request the head office of Canada for my joining for six moths.

Thank you for your time.

Your sincerely,

Nardeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the transfer, describe the handover process for your current duties, and request the manager's assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal business letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention wanting to gain experience, expanding slightly on how this specifically benefits the company would make the argument more persuasive. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'During this time period' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between your introduction and the reason for your request could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the use of linking words would enhance the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'professional network' and 'sales department' correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'provide them assess' (should be 'access') and 'request the head office... for my joining' (which is slightly unnatural). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would push the score into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'interest to work' (should be 'interest in working'), 'reason, why' (unnecessary comma), and 'I will be highly appreciated' (should be 'I would greatly appreciate'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as 'MY name' and 'moths' (typo for 'months'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score.
