Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in working at our company's head office for the duration of six months in Canada.

To begin with, I am currently working full-time as Clinical Laboratory Assistant in Alpha collection centre, Mumbai. It's a great fit for me because I thrive on hand-on work which involves handling diverse specimens. Conversely, I would like to take more responsibilities which will enable me to learn modern healthcare techniques. While I will be working with your organisation, I will ensure to assign my task to my colleagues. Besides that, I will available on phone at any time for any questions. On my return I will dedicate myself to complete all the pending work duties on time. Therefore, I kindly request that if you could make an arrangement for my work experience particularly in Microbiology department. Lastly, I have attached my resume along with this letter for your reference.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me the employment details at your earliest. Additionally, please let me know if you require any future information from my side.

Thank you for you time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Payalben Bhakta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the transfer, proposed a plan for your current workload, and requested assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how your work will be covered is quite brief and lacks detail regarding who specifically will take over your duties. To reach a higher band, ensure that your proposals are more concrete and fully developed to demonstrate a professional approach to the transition.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Conversely', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the use of 'Conversely' is incorrect in this context, as it implies a contradiction that does not exist between your current job satisfaction and your desire for more responsibility. Additionally, the paragraphing is functional, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Improving the variety and accuracy of your linking words will help your writing feel more natural and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'clinical laboratory assistant', 'specimens', and 'organisation'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'hand-on work' (should be 'hands-on') and 'assign my task' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'delegate my responsibilities' would be better). You also use 'at your earliest' without the necessary noun, such as 'at your earliest convenience'. While these errors do not impede communication, expanding your range of professional collocations would elevate the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I will available' (missing the verb 'be'), 'if you could make an arrangement' (the 'if' is redundant here), and 'Thank you for you time' (should be 'your'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that auxiliary verbs are included in your future tense constructions. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score.
