Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dea Mubashir,

I hope you are doing well. I'm writing this letter to express my intrest for the six months training in the USA head office. I do belive that working in the USA head office will significantly enhance my experties in my field of work and will help the company growrth in the future.

During my absense in the office my colleague Kashif Khan can take over my work and I will be helping him remotly if he needs help in any thing. I need your help to discuss this arrangement with the Kashif Khan. As he's gonna need to work extra hours, he might expect some extra bonus for that work.

You hired me for this job three years ago and you said that you saw a potential in me to become a succesfull in my career like you.I believe that this oportunity is highly important for my career. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Your Sincerely

Raza Khan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your motivation for the transfer, propose a solution for your current workload involving your colleague, and request the manager's assistance in facilitating this. The tone is appropriate for a professional request. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how the head office experience would specifically benefit the company's current projects rather than just mentioning 'growth' in general terms. Overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'During my absence' and 'I believe that', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. To improve, ensure that you use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, as some of the current connections feel a bit mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'significantly enhance', 'arrangement', and 'opportunity'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, including 'intrest', 'belive', 'experties', 'growrth', 'absense', 'remotly', 'succesfull', and 'oportunity'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable. While the meaning remains clear, improving your spelling accuracy and using more precise collocations would significantly elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I'm writing this letter to express...' and 'As he's gonna need to work extra hours, he might expect...'. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the Kashif Khan' (unnecessary article), 'become a succesfull' (incorrect word form), and 'gonna' (too informal for a professional letter). Additionally, there is a punctuation error in the closing 'Your Sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding informal contractions will help improve your accuracy.
