IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You work for an international company, and would like to spend six months working in its head office in another country. Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr.John

i hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in working at our overseas branch Mexico for six months.

First,I would like to explain why i am interested in working at that branch. I have experience data cleaning and building models as a data analyst. Therefore, I would be a perfect fit for the position of a data engineer.

I will ask Rohan to handle my ongoing projects because he has a experience with those clients. Also he is part of my team, so he knows all about the projects. I will be available online if he needs my assistance in any project.

I kindly request you if you could provide me all the details about the position and possible date of moving so that I can arrange my schedule accordingly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: the reason for the request, the handover plan, and the request for assistance. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. The explanation of why you want to work in the head office is quite brief, and the handover plan lacks detail regarding how the transition will be managed long-term. To improve, you should expand on the professional benefits of this move and provide more specific details about the handover process to ensure the manager feels confident in your proposal.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraph breaks for each point. You use basic cohesive devices like 'First', 'Therefore', and 'Also' to connect ideas. However, the flow is somewhat mechanical, and the transition between the request for information and the closing is abrupt. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural and less like a list of separate points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'perfect fit' and 'handle my ongoing projects' are functional but common. There are also minor errors, such as 'a experience' (should be 'experience') and 'data cleaning' (which could be more formally phrased as 'data cleansing'). To improve, incorporate more professional, business-appropriate terminology to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary suitable for a formal request to a manager.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentences. There are several grammatical errors, including punctuation issues (e.g., 'Dear Mr.John' missing a space, 'First,I' missing a space after the comma) and article usage ('a experience'). Additionally, the sentence 'I kindly request you if you could provide me' is grammatically awkward; a more natural structure would be 'I would be grateful if you could provide me with...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score.
