Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
This letter is to request you to consider my name for position that opened up in New York headquarters.
I have been an integral part of the organization for the past 5 years, and I have worked with utmost dedication and loyalty towards our corporation. This opportunity will offer me an insight on how our organization operates at the core and will offer me experience and confidence to further succeed in my career. Furthermore, this opportunity offers me to get to know the upper management more closely and monitor operational capability more efficiently. Also, this opportunity will teach me the necessary skills needed to climb up the organization tree.
As far as my work is concerned, i have been overlooking my designated duties from home much of the time and may continue to assist in doing so while working in the headquarters.
I kindly request you to help me complete the documentation required for this opportunity and also, if needed provide me necessary support needed to move.
In conclusion, i hope that you will consider my request and provide necessary support needed.
Thank you
Yours faithfully
Aditya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the reason for the request, proposing a solution for your current workload, and asking for assistance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, you mention 'opportunity' multiple times in the second paragraph, which limits the depth of your explanation. To improve, ensure each bullet point is expanded with more specific detail rather than repeating similar sentiments. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the requirements of the prompt are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is abrupt. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the opening paragraph could be more smoothly integrated with the rest of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it lacks variety and precision. You rely heavily on general terms like 'opportunity' and 'support'. While your meaning is clear, using more sophisticated collocations would enhance the professional tone. For example, instead of 'climb up the organization tree', you could use 'advance within the corporate hierarchy'. There are also minor stylistic issues, such as 'overlooking' (which means to ignore) instead of 'overseeing' (which means to supervise). Expanding your range of professional vocabulary will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. You frequently omit articles, such as 'for position' instead of 'for the position' and 'at the core' (which is correct, but 'at the heart of the organization' would be more natural). Additionally, there are capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i' used as a pronoun. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage.
