Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to express my deepest willingness to spend six months of working in our company's head office located at Japan.
As you know, I work here in the USA region as a full-time Software Engineer from last 2 years, and my job involves primarily developing customised softwares as well as troubleshooting various complex technical issues. However, it would be an wonderful experience for me if I get an opportunity to work in the head office where we have our principal data centre installed. This would allow me to directly collaborate with the senior engineers for a period of time and to facilitate to gather new experiences. A six months of working period would be sufficient for me to have an overall practical ideas about the construction, design and infrastructure of the data centre. Consequently, once I return to my home office, I will be confident enough to apply these new skills whenever I need it.
Furthermore, I would like to mention that, we have our junior engineer Mr. John who can take care of some of the regular tasks during my absence. Additionally, I will provide support and guidance remotely for any critical or emergency need.
In this regard, I would be really grateful to you if you could please allow and help me with this temporary arrangement. I am ready to provide you any further details you need.
Yours faithfully,
John Doe

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the motivation for the transfer, propose a viable solution for your current workload by mentioning a colleague and remote support, and make a polite request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a logical flow that satisfies the requirements of the task. You have maintained a consistent professional perspective throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Consequently', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas effectively. While the transition between the second and third paragraphs is clear, the overall structure is sound and easy to follow. The paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'collaborate', 'facilitate', and 'infrastructure'. However, there are some minor collocation and word choice errors, such as 'deepest willingness' (which sounds unnatural; 'strong desire' would be better) and 'softwares' (software is an uncountable noun). Additionally, 'located at Japan' should be 'located in Japan'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'This would allow me to... and to facilitate...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'from last 2 years' (should be 'for the last two years') and 'A six months of working period' (should be 'A six-month working period'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear, and you show a good grasp of formal English grammar, though more variety in complex sentence structures would elevate the score further.
