Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manager,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my interest in working in the company's head office for six months in Singapore and would like to seek your assistance in this regard.

I am particularly interested working in head office of the company for my professional development. Since I have been working in the company's marketing department for the past five years and I have become much more experienced to handle my responsibilities effectively. Now, I would like to work with senior management, and I believe that six- month training in head office can help me to learn more about company's operations and develop essential skills to work on senior positions.

To ensure that my absence does not affect my work and create any inconvenience to the company; I will complete my important projects and tasks before taking the leave. Moreover, I am willing to available online, when it is required.

I would be grateful if you could help arranging my training in the Head office. I would also appreciate your advice on preparing things before started working in it. I hope you would give me permission to get this opportunity. I am looking forward to contributing my skills and knowledge to the company, while also enhancing my career prospects.

Thank you for your support and understanding. I look forward to hearing from you positively.

Your sincerely,

Harmeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the motivation for the transfer, propose a plan for managing your current workload, and request assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a logical flow from the request to the justification and the proposed solution. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor grammatical slips do not interfere with the professional tone, such as the phrasing 'I am willing to available online', which should be 'I am willing to be available online'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'To ensure that', and 'In this regard' to link your ideas. The progression of information is smooth and coherent. To improve further, ensure that punctuation around these connectors is precise, as seen in the slight misuse of the semicolon after 'company' in the third paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'professional development', 'essential skills', and 'career prospects' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'before started working' (should be 'before starting') and 'I am willing to available' (should be 'I am willing to be available'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more precise control over verb forms and collocations to reach the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I would be grateful if you could help arranging my training' is a well-constructed complex sentence. However, there are several recurring grammatical errors, such as 'six- month training' (missing article 'a'), 'on senior positions' (should be 'for senior positions'), and 'Your sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve this score.
