Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this letter to request you to arrange a position for six months in a head office that is in Canada.

Since I am working with CNB computer company from last five years and now I would like to pursue my supervisor position in company's head office to enhance my knowledge in a different atmosphere that would be beneficial for not only my personal growth but also for the company's success.

In my absence, I would be connected with my team through video conference, and I will lead to my team while living in Canada due to the time difference that will allow me to manage well. Moreover, I will make work schedule for my team in advance.

I would be grateful, if you could arrange this for me and please let me know if you need any documentation for this process.

Yours faithfully,

Manveer

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: the reason for the request, the plan for work coverage, and the request for assistance. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall task completion. The ideas are relevant but could be more fully developed to demonstrate a higher level of professional communication. For instance, the explanation of how work will be managed is somewhat vague; mentioning specific project handovers or delegation strategies would have strengthened the response. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, though the opening is slightly abrupt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with each paragraph addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'Moreover', and 'In my absence' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences feels more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. You use some relevant business-related terms like 'head office', 'personal growth', and 'documentation'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor issues with collocation, such as 'pursue my supervisor position' (better: 'pursue a supervisory role') and 'working with CNB... from last five years' (better: 'have been working at CNB for the past five years'). Expanding your range of professional vocabulary would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'I am writing this letter to request you to arrange' is slightly awkward; 'I am writing to request that you arrange' is more natural. Additionally, 'I will lead to my team' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'I will lead my team'. There are also issues with tense usage, such as 'Since I am working... from last five years', which should be in the present perfect continuous tense.
