Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to request an opportunity to work in the company's head office in the United States for minimum six months. I believe this experience would highly beneficial for my personal growth and professional development and would allow me to gain deeper understanding of company's international operation.
working at the head office would allow me to collaborate with senior managers and colleagues from different department. I would also be able to learn international strategies, management practices and new project. I believe that the knowledge and experienced gained during this period would help in our local office when I return.
During my absence, I ensure that my current responsibilities are managed without disruption. I would be able to perform some task online through our online system and communication platform. However, the tasks need my presence would performed by my colleague. I would prepared detailed instruction and transfer them temporarily to my colleague.
I would be really grateful if you would discuss this opportunity with head office and help me arrange the necessary approval and accommodations.
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to hear from you.
Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the purpose of the request, explain how your workload will be managed during your absence, and ask for assistance in the process. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention collaborating with colleagues, you could have provided more specific details about which projects or skills you hope to focus on to make the request more persuasive. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'During my absence' to link sentences and paragraphs. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing is more precise. For example, in the third paragraph, the transition between managing tasks online and delegating them to colleagues could be smoother with more sophisticated connectors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'professional development', 'international operation', and 'disruption'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'minimum six months' (should be 'a minimum of six months') and 'the knowledge and experienced gained' (should be 'experience'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more precise collocations would enhance the professional tone of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('the company's international operation'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the tasks need my presence would performed'), and tense errors ('I would prepared'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic verb forms and article usage, and try to incorporate more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
