Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I am writing to express my interest in the recent posting for a position working abroad. I was very keen that's why I have made this opportunity my first priority.

Let me explain my situation in more detail. When I was in my final year of college one of my seniors recommended me to this organization. From that day till now I am eager to grab any possible opportunity to achieve this. Moreover, I belong to a middle-class family and can't afford to go on my own to any foreign country.

Furthermore, I have also find someone to cover my position for this gap in my absence. By this, I mean that there will be no complications to this company. One of my collegue is working in same department as mine will cover for me as well as his own schedule.

Lastly, I would like to emphasize for listening to me. Although I will need your help in setting everything up as I have no idea regarding this. I hope that you will do some good in my favour.

Yours faithfully,

Yash.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining the reason for your request, proposing a solution for your workload, and asking for assistance. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, your explanation of why you want to work abroad focuses on personal financial circumstances rather than professional development, which is less relevant in a business context. Additionally, the proposal regarding your colleague is vague, as you do not specify how the transition will be managed or how the colleague will be compensated for the extra work. To improve, focus on professional benefits and provide more concrete details regarding the handover process.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Lastly' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Some sentences feel disconnected, such as the shift from your college background to your financial situation. Improving the flow between sentences by using more varied linking phrases and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'express my interest' and 'achieve this'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'find someone' instead of 'found someone' and 'collegue' (spelling error). The phrasing 'do some good in my favour' is also unnatural in a professional context. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated business-related vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are consistently formal and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For instance, 'I was very keen that's why I have made' is a run-on sentence, and 'I have also find' contains an incorrect verb form. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'working in same department'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a stronger grasp of verb tenses and sentence construction to improve your accuracy.
