Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Kevin,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to ask weather I can spend six months in the company's head office overseas.
I would like to work in the head office because it will give me an exposure. Moreover, it is also beneficial for my career growth. I will get a chance to learn about the company's international operation and I will get a chance to learn from colleagues in a different department. The knowledge that I will gain from there can be used in our regional branch to expand the sales and productivity.
My work will be managed efficiently in my absence because I will try to complete all the important projects before leaving and explain everything to my colleagues regarding other projects. In addition, I will be available on email and video call for any urgent help.
I will really appreciate it if you could help me to arrange this by talking to senior managers and guide me through the process of this short-term transfer.
I look forward to your response.
Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly state the purpose of the request, explain the benefits for both yourself and the company, outline a plan for managing your workload, and ask for the manager's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal business request. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing a clear rationale for the transfer. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail regarding the 'important projects' mentioned, which would further strengthen the persuasiveness of your proposal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'I look forward to', which link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and supports the overall structure of the letter. The flow is smooth, and the transition between the request, the justification, and the proposed plan is handled naturally, making the letter easy to read and understand.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly and professionally. Phrases like 'career growth', 'international operation', and 'short-term transfer' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. However, there is a minor error in word choice: you used 'weather' (a meteorological term) instead of 'whether' (a conjunction). Additionally, 'give me an exposure' is slightly unnatural; 'provide me with exposure' would be more idiomatic. While these errors are minor and do not impede communication, improving your precision with collocations would help you reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically accurate, which ensures that your message is conveyed without confusion. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I will really appreciate it if you could help me to arrange this by talking to senior managers and guide me', where the parallel structure is slightly off (should be 'and guide me' or 'and help me guide'). Overall, your control of grammar is good, and the errors present are infrequent and do not interfere with the reader's understanding of your request.
