Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to ask if I could spend six months working at our company's head office the United States.

I would really like this opportunity because I believe it will help me to improve my professional skills and learn more about how out international operations are managed. Moreover, I can also have a chance to work with colleagues from different countries and gain valuable experience that I could use when return to our current office.

While I am away from the office, I believe most of my current responsibilities could be managed by other co-workers. Furthermore, I can also help them through video calls or emails if they need any assistance. I could also prepare detailed instructions and hand over to supervisors.

I would be grateful if you could help me arrange this temporary transfer. Please let me know if there are any formal procedures or documents that I need to complete.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to gearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Darshit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the transfer, provided a logical plan for your workload coverage, and made a polite request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific professional skills you hope to gain or provide more detail on the 'detailed instructions' mentioned, which would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the different requirements of the task. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'While I am away' are used appropriately to link ideas. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'when return to our current office' is slightly awkward and could be improved by using a clearer reference to the future time frame.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, using professional terms like 'temporary transfer', 'professional skills', and 'international operations'. There are a few minor slips, such as 'gearing from you' (a typo for 'hearing') and 'out international operations' (a typo for 'our'). These do not impede communication, but they do prevent a higher score. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated vocabulary to demonstrate a wider range, such as using 'facilitate' instead of 'help' or 'delegated' instead of 'managed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. However, there are a few errors, such as 'when return to our current office' (should be 'when I return') and the missing preposition in 'head office the United States' (should be 'in the United States'). These are minor slips that do not cause confusion. To achieve a higher band, ensure consistent control over subject-verb agreement and prepositions, and try to include a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions.
