Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manager,

How are you doing? I am writing this letter to kindly request for a transfer to the head office in France.

Working in the company's branch office in Nigeria has been an awesome and fulfilling experience. I have taken trainings on effective management and communication skills which will be beneficial while working at the head office. I received a mail which stated that a Nigerian will be needed to fill up the Human Resource position at the head office in France, for six months. With my skills and knowledge of French, I believe I will be a good addition to the head office. Working at the head office has always been my dream. I believe being around top leaders will help propel my drive to be the best Human Resource manager.

To handle my work while I am away, I have trained several junior colleagues. I will be in constant communication with them to ensure the work is done promptly and correctly.

I would like to seek for your help in arranging for my transfer including the relevant documentation.

Thank you very much for your time. I will be waiting your feedback.

Yours faithfully,

Osahon Abigail

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain the motivation for the transfer, propose a practical solution for your current workload by mentioning the training of junior colleagues, and make a polite request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a professional context, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific nature of the 'relevant documentation' or the timeline for the handover to further demonstrate your professional planning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To handle my work' and 'With my skills' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'fulfilling experience' and 'propel my drive' are effective. However, there are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'request for a transfer' (the verb 'request' does not require 'for') and 'waiting your feedback' (should be 'waiting for your feedback'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise professional terminology would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I have taken trainings' (training is an uncountable noun) and 'I received a mail' (usually 'an email'). Despite these small errors, your control over grammar is generally good, and you maintain a consistent professional tone throughout the letter.
