Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mrs. Green,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in working at the head office, which is located in Canada.

I would like to work at the head office, as I think that if I work in the main office for six months, I can enhance my knowledge of the company's projects and can learn tips on how to increase productivity. Apart from this, I could also experience how the head office employees deal with their customers because they are known for having productive employees across five branches.

I also found some solutions for how my work would be completed when I am in Canada. Most of my work is online, which I will do by myself, and the rest of the work will be done by my colleague, whose name is Anita Sharma.

I would like to request that you please help me to arrange six months working in the head office, as you have been working here as a manager since 2020. I hope you can talk to the head manager and explain to her why I want to work in the head office.

I hope you will take action soon.

Yours sincerely,

Harjinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained your motivation for the transfer, provided a practical solution for your current workload, and made a polite request for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific skills or projects you hope to gain exposure to at the head office, as the current explanation is a bit general. However, the response is well-focused and fulfills all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a suitable closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single idea, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this', 'I also', and 'as' to link your ideas. While the flow is logical, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and mechanical. To improve, you could vary your linking phrases and ensure smoother transitions between sentences to create a more natural, sophisticated flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'enhance', 'productivity', and 'solutions' appropriately. The language is clear and conveys your meaning without difficulty. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the 'less common' or more precise collocations that would characterize a higher band. For example, instead of 'found some solutions', you could use 'devised a plan'. Expanding your range of professional terminology would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to express...' and 'I would like to request that you please help me...'. Your grammar is generally accurate, and your meaning is always clear. There are very few errors, though some phrasing is slightly wordy (e.g., 'I am writing this letter to express' could be more concise). You have good control over punctuation and sentence construction, which ensures that your message is communicated effectively throughout the letter.
