Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Joseph,

I am writing with regards to my intention of spending six months in the company's corporate headquarters in Quwait due to its international extension across the globe.

Firstly, international experience and career improvement is one of the major reasons behind my intention because I would like to prepare my self for further opportunities in future. However, it would also aid my effective contribution to the company's growth through acquisition of new ideas and information. I think this would be helpful to the company as well as well as our department, because it will also increase productivity and achievements with quantifiable metrics.

Furthermore, I would like to also inform you about several ways my work can be executed during my absence. This could be through the use of automated machines which are available on the production floor which doesn't need much human interference, just a few commands and you will get the needed results.

Additionally, I would like to seek for your assistance in making preparations towards my trip such as approvals including reference which can be presented to board of directors before review and final processing. I look forward to your positive feedback and approval.

Yours faithfully

Abeeb Abdulraheem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the transfer, suggest a method for handling your workload, and request assistance with the administrative process. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal business letter. However, the explanation regarding how your work will be covered is somewhat vague; mentioning 'automated machines' might not be applicable to all roles, and it lacks detail on how your specific responsibilities will be managed by colleagues or remote systems. To improve, ensure your ideas are more practical and directly related to your specific job functions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Additionally' to signal the progression of your ideas. The paragraphing is logical, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the connection between sentences is more fluid rather than relying solely on list-like connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'quantifiable metrics' and 'acquisition of new ideas' are appropriate for a professional context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'international extension' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and the misspelling of 'Kuwait'. Additionally, 'seek for your assistance' is slightly redundant; 'seek your assistance' is more standard. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring precise word choice will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'which doesn't need' (should be 'which do not need' to agree with 'machines') and 'my self' (should be one word: 'myself'). The phrase 'as well as well as' contains a repetition error. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for small typographical errors.
