Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you to request a temporary transfer of six months' duration to the company's head office.

I have been working in the company at this branch for the past five years. I have learnt and grown a lot especially after being promoted to the managerial position. I have been managing a team of 15 people and we are currently concluding our project well before the deadline. I want to now upskill and supervise the next project at the head office branch. This will give me an opportunity to manage and lead a bigger team and project.

On the other hand, from the current team I can vouch Mr Sam is capable of leading the next one. I have watched his work ethic closely and I can train him for a bit before transferring. This goes without saying, I'll always be available on calls for any assistance if required.

Therefore, I would really appreciate the opportunity to work in a larger, diverse team. An international exposure would expose me to challenges that I wouldn't have encountered here locally. Lastly, I would also want to request a residence in the companys accomodation, as it would allow me to focus on work from the day that I land, without wasting time on mundane tasks. I have already put in a request to the provost, but a referral from you would expedite the process.

Yours Truly,

Amona Fuller

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the transfer, proposed a viable solution for your current workload by suggesting Mr. Sam as a replacement, and explicitly requested your manager's assistance with both the transfer and the accommodation process. The tone is professional and appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, showing a clear purpose throughout the response. You have maintained a consistent professional stance, and the letter effectively communicates your request while providing necessary context for your manager to make an informed decision.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Therefore', and 'Lastly' to link your points effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between your current achievements and your future goals is smooth. The structure is coherent, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, using terms like 'temporary transfer', 'upskill', 'work ethic', and 'expedite'. There is a good awareness of collocation and style. While there are minor errors, such as 'companys' (missing apostrophe) and 'accomodation' (spelling error), these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is sufficiently varied to express your ideas with precision. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items to further enhance the professional tone of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are accurate, and your control over grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I would also want to request' (which could be more naturally phrased as 'I would also like to request') and the missing possessive apostrophe in 'companys'. However, these are rare and do not interfere with the clarity of your message. The punctuation is generally correct, and the overall grammatical control is consistent throughout the letter.
