Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear manager,

I am writing to request the opportunity to work at our companies head office in another country for period of next six months.

I strongly believe that this assignment would beneficial for both my professional development to the company. By working with the head office i would gain advanced level understanding of international operations, learn effective practices and build strong relationship with other colleagues in other market sector. I could then share this knowledge with my current team, improve coordination between offices, and support more effective processes when i will return.

During my absence, i would make sure that my current responsibilities are not affected. I could completed my suitable tasks remotely and remain in regular contact with my current team members trough email and meetings. I am more responsible so that before leaving i would also prepared detailed handover and ensured that colleague is fully informed that require my physical presence.

I would be grateful if you could help me discuss this arrangements with head office management and advise me about the necessary procedure . I am flexible about the dates and would happy to adjust my plans according to company's requirements

Thankyou for your considering my request. I look forward to your positive response

your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, proposing a plan for your current workload, and asking for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention gaining an 'advanced level understanding,' you could have provided more specific details about which department or project you hope to join. Additionally, the request for help is a bit generic. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are more fully extended with concrete examples or specific professional goals.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs covering the required points, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'By working with,' 'During my absence,' and 'I would be grateful if.' However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor errors in referencing and sentence structure, such as the awkward phrasing in 'I am more responsible so that before leaving i would also prepared.' Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'professional development,' 'international operations,' and 'handover.' There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'companies head office' (should be 'company's') and 'trough email' (should be 'through'). Some phrases are slightly unnatural, such as 'I am more responsible so that,' which affects the precision of your communication. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated business collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that, while they do not impede communication, are noticeable. Examples include 'for period of next six months' (missing article), 'would beneficial' (missing 'be'), 'i would also prepared' (incorrect verb tense), and 'would happy' (missing 'be'). Additionally, the consistent failure to capitalize the pronoun 'I' is a recurring error that impacts the overall accuracy of the writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and basic punctuation will significantly improve your score.
