Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this mail regarding an opportunity posted on the bill board about 6 month contract transfer at head office in the Australia.

I want to work there due to two main reasons which will help me excel in my current role. To begin with, I want to work on a multitasking skill as it is mentioned in posting that they will be providing sessions on it. Secondly, it will provide ne opportunity to manage a huge team with people from diverse culture. Moreover, I will make sure that it do not affect my current responsibility because of time difference. I will be completing all allocated tasks after getting home online and also assure to attend meetings.

I am just concern about equipment to make work from home possible. If you can please send email to head branch to allow me the usage of a laptop at home it would be great.

Yours Sincerely

Deep Ukani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the motivation, proposing a plan for current duties, and requesting assistance. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of how work will be managed is vague, mentioning 'completing all allocated tasks after getting home online,' which lacks professional clarity. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening is slightly informal ('this mail'). To improve, you should expand on the specific benefits of the transfer and provide a more concrete, professional plan for your current workload to demonstrate greater responsibility.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Secondly,' and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. The transition between the request for the transfer and the request for equipment is abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'it' in 'it do not affect my current responsibility,' where the antecedent is not immediately obvious. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'opportunity,' 'multitasking,' and 'diverse culture.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'bill board' (should be 'notice board' or 'internal announcement'), 'in the Australia' (incorrect article usage), and 'I am just concern' (should be 'concerned'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring correct word forms in formal contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('it do not affect'), article misuse ('the Australia'), and missing words ('provide ne opportunity'). Punctuation is generally functional, though the closing 'Yours Sincerely' should be followed by a comma. The errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your request. To improve, pay closer attention to basic subject-verb agreement and article usage, and try to incorporate more complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
