Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing this letter to inform you about my situation. My son got admission in Cambridge University, London for his post graduation. My son never been to any foreign country before. To support him and to help him set up there i want to move to London for couple of months (6 months).
We have our head office located in London, I can work from there. So, my work would not hamper. I can assure that I will try my best to support here from head office during my absence. I been traning my junior for last 6 monthes for these. I am sure he can handle my work here very well during my absense.
In addition to this, working direclty in the head office can provide me more exposure and the opportunity to connect with other more experienced people and learn from them. Whatever knowledge I will get there could help me improve our current work office when I came back. Further more, I can spend my valuable time with my son, which can strenthen our bond.
Please let me know if you can help me out to arrange the same. Waiting for your positive response. Please reach out to me on [redacted phone].
Sincerely,
Karan Jadav
Financial officer

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, outlining the handover plan, and asking for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a formal business request. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the personal reason is clear, the explanation of how the work will be managed is slightly vague, relying on the assertion that a junior is trained without specifying how the transition will be monitored. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the response would benefit from more professional detail regarding the handover process to fully convince a manager.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the request. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition to this' and 'Further more', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the personal reason and the professional request could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the request.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some spelling errors, such as 'traning', 'monthes', 'direclty', and 'strenthen', which are noticeable. While the writer attempts to use professional terminology like 'exposure' and 'handover' (implied), the range is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, the writer should focus on more precise business collocations and ensure accuracy in spelling, as these errors occasionally distract from the professional tone of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'My son never been to' (missing auxiliary verb), 'I been traning' (missing auxiliary), and 'when I came back' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. While the meaning is never in doubt, the frequency of these small errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
