Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Alice,
I am writing to express my interest in the temporary position that is vacant in the head office in Paris.
There are various reason I want to work at the head office. First, this will give me the opportunity to learn the extended part of my current job as the position that is vacant is of my controller. The other reason is that it will give in in-depth knowledge about her work which will allow me to improvise my work when I am back.
I will provide necessary training to Ash and provide all details of my work. Additionally, While I am away, I will be in constant touch with her to make sure that she faces no challenges and is able to carry on the work effectively
Can you please extend your help me to grab the opportunity by suggested my name to the Vice president. I have been waiting for this since 2 years. I believe I am the right person because I know French which will make communication easier and I have some knowledge that is required for the position.
Hope you will consider my application. looking forward to hear back from you soon.
Thanks & Regard,
Reshma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the motivation for the transfer, propose a handover plan involving a colleague, and request assistance in contacting the Vice President. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how your work will be covered is brief. To improve, you could provide more specific details about the handover process or the specific skills you hope to acquire. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Additionally', and 'While I am away' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'temporary position', 'in-depth knowledge', and 'effectively'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'improvise my work' (which should be 'improve') and 'suggested my name' (which should be 'suggesting'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage. You have successfully used some professional terminology, but incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations related to business and professional development would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'There are various reason' (should be 'reasons'), 'give in in-depth' (should be 'give me'), and 'since 2 years' (should be 'for 2 years'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and spelling issues, such as 'Regard' instead of 'Regards'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, you should focus on subject-verb agreement, preposition usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy.
