Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Adam,

I am writing this letter to request you to allow me to work in the company's head office located in Paris for half an year.

The reason that I want to work there is to get the exposure of the nature of work`there. There is also an international conference coming in the last quarter of this year and I want to attend that so that I can learn from it and be a better asset to the company.

Since most of our work is online, I will be able to get all of my work from there as well. I will take the office laptop and other necessary equipments with me and I assure you that my tasks would not be compromised.

It would be highly appreciated if you could make the arrangements and enroll me in the conference. If any assistance needed from my side, I am more than happy to help.

Kind regards

Aiden

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the transfer, proposed a practical solution for your workload, and requested the manager's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the international conference, explaining how your specific role would benefit from this exposure would have strengthened the argument. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Since' and 'If', which help connect your ideas. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to improve the flow between sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using professional terms like 'exposure', 'asset', and 'arrangements'. There are a few minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'half an year' (should be 'half a year') and 'get all of my work from there' (which is slightly informal). Additionally, 'equipments' is an uncountable noun and should be written as 'equipment'. Despite these small errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and maintain a professional tone throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are grammatically sound and easy to understand. There are a few minor errors, such as the article usage in 'get the exposure of the nature of work' (the 'the' before exposure is unnecessary) and the pluralization of 'equipments'. However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to vary your sentence structure further by using more complex clauses or passive voice constructions, which are often useful in formal business correspondence.
