Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing to express my interest to work for six months in our company- Delta International's head office in Paris. I read about an opening for the position of a 'Project Manager' on our company's website and I acquire the necessary skills because I have been working as a Business Analyst for the last five years in our company.

Let me explain why I want to work in the company's head office for six months. To begin with, I have known about our company because I am a long standing employee as well as for a 'Project Manager' position the most important skill is time management and you know how particular I am when it comes to managing project time lines. I have also maintained a good network with colleagues and clients not only in our office but also in the head office. Lastly, I am fluent in speaking French language which is imperative to work in Paris.

While I am away, my work could be well managed by my junior 'Business Analyst' Brian Markowski. He is well trained and he has been communicating with clients as well as internal team for our current project. However, if he will need any help, I will be available via phone call or an email to guide him. In this way, he will also get a chance to lead the team in my absence.

Sir, I assure you I will not disappoint you and also after coming back I will be able to serve better to our clients in India. Although, I can arrange an accommodation myself as I know a few colleagues in Paris head office, I will need your help for the arrangement of flight tickets.

Thank you for your kind consideration!

Yours sincerely,

Alex white

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You explained your motivation for the transfer, proposed a clear plan for your current workload by delegating to a junior colleague, and requested the manager's assistance with logistics. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure your reasons for the transfer are more professional and less focused on your own personal skills; for example, focus more on how the experience at the head office would benefit the company's operations in India upon your return, rather than just stating you are a 'long standing employee'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Lastly', and 'In this way' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between your current role and the request for help could be more fluidly integrated into the overall narrative of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'imperative to work' and 'kind consideration' are appropriate for a formal context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'I acquire the necessary skills' (should be 'I possess' or 'I have acquired') and 'serve better to our clients' (should be 'better serve our clients'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise' at a higher band level. Focus on collocations and more natural phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'I am writing to express my interest to work' should be 'interest in working'. Additionally, 'if he will need any help' is an incorrect use of the future tense in a conditional clause; it should be 'if he needs any help'. Punctuation is generally good, but there are some minor errors with articles and prepositions. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
