Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. John,

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I am writing this letter to request your consideration in allowing me to work at company's head office overseas for six months.

I believe that working at main branch of the company would greatly help to enhance my professional development and give valuable insights about the organization's global operations. Additionally, working directly with the senior management would assist me in understanding the strategic decision making techniques. Therefore, upon my return, I could use those techniques for our regional development.

To ensure that all of my work duties are done smoothly and on time without any problem, I would continue working remotely and would provide details about the projects through weekly virtual meetings and detailed reports. Moreover, I would remain available across the time zones to ensure that the team members can contact me anytime ensuring that workflow remains smooth.

I would be grateful if you could approve my temporary placement at head office. I would appreciate if you could guide me about necessary form which needs to be filled or connect me to the HR to initiate the transfer process. Upon my return, I believe that I could add value to the assets of the company using my skills and experience.

Thank you for considering my request. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Pratham

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the motivation for the transfer, proposed a logical plan for maintaining your current workload through remote work and virtual meetings, and appropriately requested assistance with the administrative process. The tone is consistently professional and appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear rationale for your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use articles (e.g., 'the company's head office' instead of 'company's head office') to ensure complete grammatical accuracy in your task fulfillment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'Upon my return' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure follows a standard formal letter format. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between your request and the proposed solutions is clearly established throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'professional development', 'global operations', 'strategic decision making', and 'temporary placement'. The word choice is generally precise and fits the formal tone required for this task. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic professional expressions to show greater flexibility, though your current usage is already quite effective for this task type.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar is strong. There are minor slips, such as missing articles (e.g., 'at company's head office' should be 'at the company's head office' and 'at main branch' should be 'at the main branch'). Additionally, 'guide me about necessary form' should be 'guide me regarding the necessary forms'. Despite these small inaccuracies, your control over complex structures is good, and the meaning is never obscured. The punctuation is generally accurate throughout the letter.
