Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am seeking opportunity to work Ripple Engineering company head office for six months which is located in Kathmandu Nepal. I would like to experience the difference in working in small branch and main office as a Safety officer.

I have been working here in Ottawa branch since 2023, so far I have really good experience but I would to explore the opportunity and work outside my comfort zone to upskill myself. In addition to that, I have been planning to join university next summer for Master degree on Health and safety and I felt this is good chance to understand the proper health and safety company which served more than a thousand clients.

While I am away from this branch, we still have few months for this adventure in this time I could give proper training to our Assistant Safety officer. He has really good understanding and skills which is necessary for this role.

I need your assistance to reach out our company CEO and head HR for this role as well as performance letter so this transition will smoother.

Yours faithfully,

Keshav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for the transfer, proposed a handover plan involving the Assistant Safety Officer, and requested your manager's assistance with the transition. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal business letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of how your work will be covered could be more detailed to reassure your manager. Additionally, the opening is slightly abrupt. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully extended and that the professional tone is maintained consistently throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition to that' and 'While I am away', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from a more sophisticated range of linking words to improve the flow of information and ensure the progression of ideas feels more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'upskill', 'transition', and 'comfort zone'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'proper health and safety company' (which is vague) and 'performance letter' (which should likely be 'letter of recommendation' or 'reference'). There are also minor grammatical errors in word form, such as 'Master degree' instead of 'Master's degree'. To improve, focus on using more precise professional terminology and ensuring that collocations are natural and accurate for a business context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as missing articles ('the' Ripple Engineering company, 'the' Master's degree) and prepositional errors ('work Ripple Engineering' instead of 'work at'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'we still have few months for this adventure', which sounds informal. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
