Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Anderson,
I am writing this letter to express my intent to work from the head office in Seoul, Korea, for next six months. I have been working as a senior consultant in Seattle, Washington, for past two years now. In order to upgrade my professional career, I would like to learn to deal with global clients. To achieve that, I need to spend some time under my mentor, the Head Consultant, in the headquarters.
While I am offshore, my projects can be easily dealt mostly through online meetings and tasks. I assure that I will be able to present my reports and make up to my appointments on a Zoom or a Teams call. Hence, it won't interrupt the smooth functioning of the assignments.
Finally, I will greatly appreciate your assistance in arranging my smooth transition from the Seattle office to Seoul main office. If possible, can you also send my performance report to the Head Consultant, so he can review it beforehand. Should you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks.
Yours faithfully,
Peter Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the motivation for the transfer, propose a viable method for managing your current workload remotely, and make a polite request for assistance. The tone is professional and appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail regarding the nature of the 'global clients' or the specific projects you intend to manage, which would further demonstrate your professional engagement with the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use appropriate paragraphing and cohesive devices such as 'While I am offshore', 'Hence', and 'Finally' to link your ideas. The transition between the explanation of your work and the request for help is smooth. The structure is logical and consistent throughout, making the letter easy to read and understand. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, which is a strength.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'senior consultant', 'professional career', and 'smooth transition'. The language is generally precise and fits the formal tone required. There are a few minor collocation issues, such as 'make up to my appointments' (which should be 'keep my appointments') and 'offshore' (which is usually used for oil rigs or specific industries; 'working remotely' or 'abroad' would be more natural). However, these minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, and your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense is generally strong. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'for next six months' (missing 'the') and 'for past two years' (missing 'the'). Additionally, 'I assure that I will be able to' should be 'I assure you that...'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are accurate, and the grammatical control is sufficient to maintain a professional tone throughout the letter.
