Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Tom,
I am writing this letter as I heard about an opening for team lead position in head office in Australia. I would like to apply for this position as I think that I could be a valuable asset in the head office. I have the skills and I could lead the team in an efficient manner, simultaneously ensuring success of the project. Though, not the primary reason but my family also resides in Australia and this job will give me a chance to spend some quality time with them.
If I get selected, then I understand that my position will be vacant here and someone will have to be placed to fulfil my responsibilities. Tim from my team can take that position and I will be glad to handover my tasks to him before I leave.
I would be obliged if you could recommend me for this position. I am really looking forward to this and awaiting a positive response from your side.
Yours sincerely,
Adam Gilbert

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained your motivation for the move, proposed a solution for your current workload by suggesting a colleague, and requested assistance from your manager. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention that Tim can take over your tasks, providing a bit more detail on how you would ensure a smooth transition (such as a handover period or documentation) would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of the explanation could be improved to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'If I get selected' and 'Though', which help the flow. However, the transition between the motivation for the move and the logistical details could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple sentence starters.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'valuable asset', 'efficient manner', and 'obliged'. The language is generally accurate and fits the formal context of a letter to a manager. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. However, the vocabulary is somewhat standard and lacks the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would characterize a higher band. To improve, try incorporating more specific professional terminology related to project management or international business operations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter as I heard...' and 'I would be obliged if you could recommend me...'. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally good. There is a minor punctuation error in the opening ('Dear Mr. Tom,' should ideally be 'Dear Mr. [Surname],') and a slight awkwardness in 'Though, not the primary reason but...'. Despite these minor slips, your grammar does not impede communication, and you show a good command of sentence construction.
