Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

Letter to request a transfer in head office of Canada's company.

My name is Rajpreet Kaur, id [redacted phone], working in marketing sector at your company. I really need to get a six month transfer in the head office of Canada due to my ongoing diploma. Besides this, working on overseas project is another reason to have a work in the head office of Canada.

Moving further, I received a lot of foreign request related to overseas tasks, so I manage my work over there with the help of other colleagues. Additionally, I will manage to get the evening classes for my studies, therefore, I am able to do work in the office hours.

Lastly, It is very helpful if you arrange a meeting with CEO of the company to get the permission of transfer to head office in Canada. In addition to this, I request you to arrange a letter of notice to the head office of my new internship of six months.

I look forward to hear from you.

Yours faithfully,

Rajpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: the reason for the transfer, the plan for your current workload, and the request for assistance. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, your explanation of how your work will be covered is vague; mentioning that you will manage it with colleagues is a good start, but it lacks the professional detail expected in a formal business request. Additionally, the tone is occasionally inconsistent with a formal letter to a manager, particularly in the opening and the request to meet the CEO, which seems overly ambitious for a standard transfer request. To improve, ensure your explanations are more detailed and professional in tone.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moving further,' 'Additionally,' and 'Lastly' to transition between ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or unnatural in a business context. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the request to the logistics and finally to the call to action. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the flow between sentences feels more natural and less like a list of separate points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant business-related terms like 'marketing sector,' 'overseas project,' and 'internship.' However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'get a six month transfer' (better: 'request a six-month secondment') and 'foreign request' (better: 'international inquiries'). The phrase 'manage to get the evening classes' is also slightly unnatural. Expanding your range of professional vocabulary and focusing on more precise collocations will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'working in marketing sector at your company' is missing an article ('the'), and 'have a work in the head office' is grammatically incorrect (should be 'work in the head office'). There are also issues with prepositions and article usage, such as 'in head office' instead of 'at the head office.' While these errors do not prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to limit your score. Focus on proofreading for basic articles and preposition usage.
