Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing to inform you that I would like to work in the company head office in another country for next six months because I think it helps me to improve my performance and communication skills as well.

Firstly, recently I faced several difficulties related to my communication skills because I am not feel confident when I speak in english with our clients. Moreover, I felt my performance also affect due to this problem. This is the main reason, I am thinking it is a great idea work in the company head office helps me to solve this problem.

Furthermore, I already talk with one of my friend. He is a marketing manager and he has lot of experience in this field. I think he is a best person to cover my responsibilities.

Apart from that, I ask for his help and he is willing to cover my duties because he is just retired from his job and he has nothing to do, if you give me a permission, I can conduct a meeting with you so you can decide he is a right person for this job or not.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Sargun

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining the reason for the request, proposing a solution for the workload, and asking for assistance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding communication skills is repetitive, and the proposal to have a retired friend cover professional responsibilities is not entirely realistic or professional in a corporate context. While the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, the content lacks the depth required for a higher band score. The purpose of the letter is clear, but the arguments could be more persuasive and better aligned with standard business practices.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Apart from that'. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used to connect ideas that are not fully developed. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Overall, the structure is sufficient for the task, but the use of cohesive devices could be more natural and varied to achieve a higher level of fluency.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are several instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'I am not feel confident' (grammatical error affecting lexical accuracy) and 'he has nothing to do'. The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, you should aim to use more precise business-related terminology. For example, instead of saying 'I already talk with one of my friend', a more professional phrasing would be 'I have consulted with a colleague'. The current level is sufficient to convey meaning, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'I am not feel confident', 'my performance also affect', 'it is a great idea work', and 'he is a best person'. These errors, particularly with verb forms and articles, are noticeable. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these slips prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of auxiliary verbs to improve your accuracy.
