Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

This is with regards to taking experience in Foreign country. I would like to highlight here is that i heard that company is giving opportunity to old employees to work in head office for 6 months. This will help us experiencing new ideas that other countries follow. We will get chance to excel our skills by working with leaders of the head office.

I totally agree that there are certain responsibilities in this office to be fulfilled. I totally assure you that as everything is available on cloud, i will complete all the major tasks from there. I have spoken to my other colleague Clara, she will manager few responsibilities here on my behalf as she is already doing good job and managing the things. It's my belief that she will be able to manage the things.

Here, i need your guidance and assistance in filing my application with HR, so that they can consider me for this opportunity.

I strongly believe this opportunity will bring more productivity and give new idea for the growth of our company. Hope you will support me with this and help me grasping this opportunity.

Your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter successfully covers all three bullet points from the prompt. First, the writer explains the desire to work in the head office for six months to gain experience with new ideas and excel skills with leaders. Second, the response outlines how work will be handled during the absence, mentioning cloud storage and a colleague named Clara who will manage responsibilities. Third, it clearly asks for the manager's guidance and assistance in filing the application with HR. The tone is appropriate for a workplace communication, although the formal opening 'Dear Sir' could be improved if addressing a known manager. Overall, the requirements of the task are well-addressed with clear, relevant ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is generally coherent and arranged into logical paragraphs that separate the different points of the prompt, such as the reason for the request, the coverage of duties, and the call for assistance. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'I would like to highlight here is that i heard that...' feels a bit clunky, and referencing could be smoother, as seen in the repetition of 'manage the things' within consecutive sentences. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow overall, though some cohesive devices are basic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their message clearly. There are attempts at less common phrasing such as 'excel our skills' and 'bring more productivity', though word choices and collocations are sometimes unnatural, such as 'taking experience in Foreign country' instead of 'gaining experience abroad'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but there are noticeable errors in capitalization, such as lowercase 'i' used multiple times. The lexical range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but occasional inaccuracies prevent it from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues, most notably the consistent failure to capitalize the pronoun 'i' throughout the text. Additionally, minor phrasing errors occur, such as 'she will manager few responsibilities' instead of 'manage', and missing articles like 'the company' or 'a foreign country'. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning of each sentence remains clear to the reader. Control over complex sentences is developing, with a mix of accurate and flawed structures.
