Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Manager,
I am writing to request permission to work at our company's head office in London for six months.
I would like to spend this peiod at the head office because I believe it would be a valuable opportunity for my professional development. Working alongside colleagues from different departments would aloow me to gain international experience, leran new skills and better understand how our global operations are managed. I also believe that this experence could benefit our locol office when i return.
During my time away, I would be able to continue most of my current responsibilities remotely. I can attend meetings through video conferencing, communicate with my team by email and complete my daily tasks using the company’s online systems. I would also make sure that all deadlines are met and provide regular updates to my supervisor.
I would be grateful if you could help me arrange the necessary permission, accommodation and other practical requirements for the temporary transfer. Please let me know if you need any further information from me.
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Prabhjot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The candidate has fully and effectively addressed all parts of the task prompt. The letter opens with a clear request to work at the London head office for six months. The first bullet point is well-developed with reasons relating to professional development, gaining international experience, and benefiting the local office upon return. The second bullet point is thoroughly covered by detailing how current responsibilities will be maintained remotely via video conferencing, email, and online systems. Finally, the third bullet point is successfully addressed by asking for help with permission, accommodation, and practical arrangements. The tone is appropriately formal and polite throughout, fulfilling all communicative purposes of a general training task 1 letter. There are no omissions or under-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped into sensible paragraphs: an introduction, a paragraph detailing the reasons for the request, a paragraph explaining remote work logistics, and a concluding paragraph handling assistance and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'During my time away', 'I would also', and 'Please let me know' are used effectively to guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing throughout the letter is clear and unambiguous, contributing to an overall seamless reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common business terms such as 'professional development', 'global operations', 'temporary transfer', and 'responsibilities'. While there are a few minor spelling slips ('peiod', 'aloow', 'leran', 'locol'), these are clearly isolated mechanical errors rather than a fundamental lack of vocabulary knowledge. The use of vocabulary is precise enough to convey the intended message without any impedance to communication. To reach higher bands, the writer could incorporate more sophisticated idiomatic expressions or collocation variations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The writer displays a good command of grammatical structures, successfully utilising a mix of simple and complex sentences. Examples of complex structures include 'I would like to spend this period at the head office because I believe it would be a valuable opportunity...' and 'I would be grateful if you could help me arrange...'. The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate. There are minor spelling and typographical errors ('peiod', 'aloow', 'leran', 'locol' instead of period, allow, learn, local), but these do not impede communication or detract from the overall high quality of the grammatical control demonstrated.
