Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt, albeit with some limitations in clarity and depth. The writer explains why they want to work in the head office by citing packaging and distribution issues in America, mentions how their work will be handled in their absence by coworkers, and explicitly asks the manager for help with booking tickets and hotels. However, the explanation regarding the manufacturing and distribution issues is somewhat convoluted and lacks full professional articulation. Despite these minor developmental issues, the task is adequately addressed throughout the letter, satisfying the core requirements of a General Training Task 1 response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into distinct paragraphs corresponding to the different parts of the prompt, giving it a coherent overall arrangement. Basic cohesive devices are used, such as 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'For that reason', though some referencing is slightly clunky or repetitive. Paragraphing is attempted, but paragraph breaks and spacing are handled inconsistently. While the progression of ideas is generally logical and understandable, the mechanical use of transitional phrases and occasional awkward sequencing keep the response within the Band 6 descriptor range.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their core message effectively. There are several attempts at less common work-related vocabulary, such as 'packaging and distribution sector', 'international company', and 'anticipation'. However, frequent lexical errors and inaccurate word choices are evident throughout the text, including 'oppertunity', 'went their' instead of 'go there', 'explaing', 'breif', 'alreay talk', and 'help full'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses like 'as i am working for our international company since long time' and 'beacuse of the changes that we have done last month'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak. There are numerous errors involving tense usage ('as i am working... since long time', 'we have done'), prepositions ('placed in America' instead of 'located in America'), spelling, and capitalization ('i'). Furthermore, frequent punctuation and spacing errors persist throughout. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar score solidly at Band 5.
