Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to request you to arrange my transfer in head office in another country for a bried period of time.

As you know, I have been working with your company for 2 years now and I have always been a hardworking employee. You will be glad to know that I have been selected on a scholarship programme for business management in another country. This programme is part-time course with 6 months length. Therefore, I wanted that I could be shifted to head office at the same position for a brief time period , it will help me to better work and also cope with my studies.

I assure you that I will train all my sub ordnates about the projects and will have detail meeting with my senior colleagues and brief them about my work here. In this way, there will be no delay or disruption in office work.

I hope you will ponder upon my request and help me to make particular arrangements regarding my transfer.

Yours sincerely

Aiman Irfan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt. The writer explains why they want to work in the head office (citing a scholarship programme for business management lasting six months), outlines how their work will be covered during their absence (training subordinates and holding detailed meetings with senior colleagues), and appropriately asks for the manager's help in arranging the transfer. The tone is suitable for a semi-formal workplace letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are adequately extended and supported, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, though some minor details could be further elaborated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the reason for the transfer, the coverage of duties, and the closing request. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transition words like 'Therefore' and 'In this way' connecting ideas. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition into the details of the scholarship programme. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating workplace concepts. Phrases like 'hardworking employee', 'scholarship programme', and 'disruption in office work' are used appropriately. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'bried' instead of 'brief', 'part-time course with 6 months length' instead of a 'six-month part-time course', and 'sub ordnates' instead of 'subordinates'. These lexical inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band, placing it solidly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and subordinate clauses. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text. For instance, 'request you to arrange my transfer in head office' contains a preposition error ('in' instead of 'to'), and 'I wanted that I could be shifted' is unnatural phrasing. Punctuation errors are also present, such as unnecessary spaces before commas. Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded, which aligns with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
