Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest in working at a head office of a company in a different country for six months and to seek your assistance in arranging it.
The main reason why I would like to work in the company's head office is that I would like to enhance my professional skills such as communication, interpersonal and empathetic skills. I believe, working in the same organisation in another nation would help me broden my perspective and make me more productive.
My work in this company could be done by other colleagues while I am away. I explained them everything about my work and they make me ensure that they will manage everything cooperately with their work.
I would appreciate it if you could manage my international trip. Could you please communicate to company's head office and give my reference? If it is possible, could you request them coverning all my expenses as I am going to work for the company.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earlist convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Prabh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student clearly explains the motivation for wanting to work at the head office, mentioning professional skill enhancement such as communication and empathy. The second bullet point is addressed by stating that colleagues will handle the workload in the writer's absence. Finally, the third bullet point is met by asking the manager for assistance in arranging the transfer, contacting the head office, and covering expenses. The tone is appropriately formal for a business letter to a manager. Ideas are relevant and developed adequately, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a proper sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as reasons for the move, work coverage, and requests for assistance. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, although some transitions and referencing could be smoother, such as the slightly abrupt shift in 'I explained them everything about my work'. Overall, there is a clear logical progression throughout the response, placing it firmly in the Band 7 category.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'professional skills', 'interpersonal', 'perspective', and 'earliest convenience'. Less common items are attempted with some awareness of style, though there are minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'broden' (spelling error for broaden), 'make me ensure', and 'request them coverning all my expenses'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching higher bands. The range is adequate and meets Band 6 standards.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as conditional clauses ('If it is possible, could you request...') and noun clauses ('The main reason why I would like to work...'). However, there are several grammatical and mechanical errors present, such as 'a head office of a company' instead of 'the head office', 'I explained them everything' instead of 'I explained everything to them', and 'earlist' instead of 'earliest'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and the sentence structures remain comprehensible, supporting a solid Band 6 score.
