Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I would like to discuss an oppurtunity with you, that can benefit us both in future.

I have been a part of this company for past 10 years, you were the first person who gave me a chance to show my potential, and I have tried my best to never let you down ever since.

I have heard there is a temporary position opening up at your branch in Paris, I would not want to miss on such an oppurtunity. It has always been my dream, to work in the fashion hub of the World.

I can only imagine how much experience i will gain, learning from the pioneers.

I understand you might be concerned about the workload that you might have to carry while I will be away but I assure you that is not going to happen. I have always prioritized my work here and that is not going to change. I can work remotely on weekdays and we can set up a meeting on weekends where we can discuss my upcoming tasks.

I would really appreciate if you can recommend my name for this position and give me a good reference so that i have a better chance of getting accepted for this role.

Regards,

Novaira Waseem

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the general training task. You clearly explain your desire to work in the Paris head office for six months citing personal and professional aspirations such as working in the fashion hub of the world. You also explain how your work can be managed while away by stating that you can work remotely on weekdays and arrange weekend meetings. Finally, you explicitly ask for your manager's help and recommendation for the role. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a manager, and the purpose of the communication is transparent throughout. Ideas are relevant and fully developed, meeting the expectations for a solid band score in this category.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs that separate the introduction, the reasoning, the solution for workload management, and the final request. Progression of ideas is mostly logical, although the transition between paragraphs could be smoother. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'ever since' and 'however', but referencing is occasionally a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure your thoughts, but dividing the longer middle section into more distinct paragraphs would enhance the overall flow. Overall, the text is easy to follow and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'prioritized', 'potential', and 'pioneers'. However, there are a few noticeable spelling and word choice errors, most notably the misspelling of 'oppurtunity' (opportunity) twice in the text. There are also slight punctuation and capitalization slips, such as lower-case 'i'. Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over several structures, such as conditional and multi-clause sentences ('I understand you might be concerned...'). However, there are several punctuation and grammar errors, including comma splices and run-on sentences, such as 'I would like to discuss an opportunity with you, that can benefit us both in future' and 'It has always been my dream, to work...'. The majority of sentences are understandable, and the errors rarely impede communication, placing your writing comfortably at a competent level.
