Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mike,

I hope you are well. I am writing to you today to request that I would like to work in the head office of our company for six months that is located in Islamabad, Pakistan. The main reason for this request is that I want to work in a bigger team temporarily to gain more exposure and enhace my skills. If I get this opportunity I can assure you that the expertise and exposure I get from this experience will benefit our company in long term.

While I am away, I will make sure that my work could be managed remotely even if I have to work overtime or on weekends.

If my request is granted, I request for your assistance in compiling a calendar based to-do list of my tasks for these six months. I would also need your help to discuss the remote based workflow that I can follow during this time. I will make sure that all my tasks are completed before the deadlines.

Looking forward to you response.

Kind Regards,

Waqas

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate has successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task prompt. First, the reason for wanting to work in the head office in Islamabad is clearly stated as a desire to join a bigger team, gain more exposure, and enhance professional skills. Second, the student explains how their work will be handled by working remotely, managing tasks proactively, and offering to work overtime or on weekends. Third, the letter appropriately asks the manager for assistance in organizing a calendar-based to-do list and discussing a remote workflow. The tone of the letter is suitably polite and professional throughout. The purpose of the letter is fully clear and all requirements are met adequately, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the solid coverage of all parts, a score of 6.5 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a clear overall structure with a standard greeting, well-defined body paragraphs, and a proper sign-off. The progression of ideas makes sense as the student moves from the purpose of the request to work arrangements and finally to asking for specific help. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thoughts and requests. However, cohesive devices are somewhat basic or occasionally repetitive, such as the frequent repetition of 'I will make sure' across multiple sentences. Reference words are generally clear, but the organization could be smoother with a wider variety of linking phrases. This performance fits comfortably into the Band 6.5 range, demonstrating logical organization despite minor mechanical cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common business-related terms and expressions such as 'professional exposure,' 'remotely,' and 'deadlines.' However, there are a few notable lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as spelling 'enhance' as 'enhace' and phrasing like 'request that I would like to work' which exhibits slight awkwardness. There is also some repetition of words like 'work,' 'exposure,' and 'help.' While communication is never impeded and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, these occasional slips and restricted flexibility keep the score at a solid Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'that is located in Islamabad, Pakistan' and 'even if I have to work overtime.' However, there are grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, notably in the opening sentence ('request that I would like to work'), redundant wording ('calendar based to-do list'), and a missing preposition in the final sentence ('Looking forward to you response'). Despite these errors, they do not impede overall communication and the majority of simple sentences remain accurate. This profile matches the Band 6.0 criteria for grammatical range and accuracy.
