Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Smith,
I am writing regarding working at the company's international head office for six months. The purpose of this letter is to request permission to work at the head office for six months and explain how this arrangement could be managed, and I would like to provide some further details.
To begin with, the main reason for this is that working at the head office would allow me to gain international experience and develop a better understanding of the company's global operations. I believe this information is particularly relevant and helps to explain the matter more clearly.
Furthermore, I would like to mention that my current responsibilities could be shared among my colleagues, while I could continue handling important tasks remotely. This is an important point to consider, and I hope it will be taken into account.
Finally, I would appreciate it if you could help me arrange this opportunity and discuss my request with the relevant department at the head office. I hope this information will be useful and lead to a satisfactory outcome.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I would appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student clearly explains the purpose of the letter and the reasons for wanting to work at the international head office, noting the desire to 'gain international experience'. Furthermore, the letter outlines how work could be managed during the absence by mentioning that responsibilities 'could be shared among my colleagues' while tasks are handled remotely. Finally, it appropriately asks for the manager's help in arranging the opportunity. The tone is suitably formal and polite for a professional communication to a manager. Ideas are relevant and developed adequately, meeting all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear and logical organisation. It begins with a standard polite opening and a clear statement of purpose, followed by well-sequenced body paragraphs addressing the reasons for the request, work coverage, and a call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main point allocated to its own distinct paragraph. Referencing and substitution are handled well, ensuring smooth progression throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context. Phrases such as 'international head office', 'global operations', 'current responsibilities', and 'relevant department' show an ability to use topic-specific terminology accurately. While much of the vocabulary is standard and functional rather than highly sophisticated, there are attempts at less common items like 'satisfactory outcome' and 'consideration'. Spelling and word choice are accurate throughout, with no noticeable errors impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writer uses a healthy mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing effectively. Examples such as 'I am writing regarding working at the company's international head office' and 'I would appreciate it if you could help me arrange this opportunity' demonstrate good control over grammar and punctuation. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the few minor clunky phrasing issues do not impede communication in any way. Punctuation and formal letter conventions are handled correctly.
