Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Frank,
I am writing this letter regarding a request in moving me to the headquarters in Paris for the duration of six months. The reason for this is because, I want to go on a tour round the city and this has been on my to-do list. I have a keen interest in tourism and this would help for fufill my heart desire.
Thus, I can work remotely. I have also made arrangments for the duration of my transfer with Martha my personal assistant to help me with the rescheduling of my meetings till I am back and she would also run the office in my absence.
I would be deeply grateful if you can grant me this request. I really require your assistant on this matter because you are in a position to make it work. It would be a fun and exciting experience for me and I hope you assist me in seeing this through.
I hope you receive this letter in good health.
Warm regards,
Roland.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The candidate addresses all parts of the prompt, but the development of the ideas is somewhat unconventional and heavily focused on personal leisure rather than professional justification. Specifically, the explanation for wanting to work in Paris mentions that it has been on the writer's 'to-do list' to tour the city and 'fufill my heart desire,' which is not typical for a business request. However, the letter successfully explains how work would be done remotely with the assistance of Martha, and asks the manager for help in arranging the transfer. The tone is polite and the formal letter structure is followed, including the requested opening salutation 'Dear Mr. Frank,'. Despite the unusual motivation regarding tourism, the bullet points of the task are all covered, leading to a competent completion of the communication goal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are broken down into sensible paragraphs corresponding to the different parts of the prompt: introduction and reason for the move, work coverage during absence, and the request for assistance. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Thus' and 'Martha my personal assistant to help me with the rescheduling of my meetings till I am back and she would also run the office'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct points, although some transitional linking could be smoother. Referencing is mostly clear, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's argument without confusion, matching the criteria for a Band 6.5 or 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'headquarters', 'remotely', and 'rescheduling'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'regarding a request in moving me' (instead of 'to move me'), 'tour round' (instead of 'around'), and the spelling error 'fufill' instead of 'fulfil'. Additionally, phrases like 'heart desire' sound unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, these slips and the lack of sophisticated precision prevent the score from reaching higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative structures ('I would be deeply grateful if you can grant me this request'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including 'regarding a request in moving me', 'help for fufill my heart desire', and 'if you can grant' (which should ideally be 'could grant' for a hypothetical formal request). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors are present, they do not impede communication. The control of grammar is decent overall, aligning closely with a Band 6.0 descriptor.
