Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I am writing to request you, I am planning to meet my family in Australia, and I want to continue my work for six months from the Head office, which is located in Australia.

As I have mentioned, I have not been meet my family for two years and I got to know that, our headoffice is operated in brisbane, Australia. Therefore, I think, it would be a great oppurtunity for me to meet my family and work from from our headoffice. Moreover, It would better for me to know how the upper management manage various queries.

It could be easy to login my credentials in any computer of headoffice because, in office, everything is connected with a network and I can access through a VPN (Virtual Private Network), as I am away from the office. Unfortunately, I need laptop from our office, because I do not want to take any risk, if something goes wrong.

Overall, it would be appreciated, if you consider my request. Thank you so much in advance.

Kind Regards,

James

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, you explain why you want to work in the head office in Brisbane, mentioning that you want to meet your family whom you have not seen for two years. Second, you address how your work will be done by explaining that you can access everything through a VPN, although you also request a company laptop. Third, you explicitly ask for your manager's help in arranging the transfer with the closing statement. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a manager. Ideas are clearly presented, though they could be further extended for a higher band. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical letter structure, starting with a clear purpose and ending with a polite request. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the motivation for the move in the second paragraph and the technical logistics in the third paragraph. However, some cohesive devices feel a bit repetitive or mechanical, such as the frequent use of 'and' and 'because'. Referencing is generally clear, but transitions between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher score. Punctuation errors at times affect the flow of ideas, aligning the performance closely with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'credentials', 'Virtual Private Network', and 'upper management'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'oppurtunity' instead of 'opportunity', 'headoffice' as one word, and awkward phrasing like 'write a request you'. Additionally, 'operated in brisbane' is imprecise collocation. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses (e.g., 'which is located in Australia'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text. Examples include comma splices ('As I have mentioned, I have not been meet my family...', 'Moreover, It would better...'), incorrect verb forms ('have not been meet'), and missing articles ('need laptop from our office'). While these errors rarely impede communication, they demonstrate a lack of consistent control over complex grammar, placing this performance firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
