Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my interest in working at the IT support team at the company's head office in New York for the next six months.

Currently, I work as a senior IT technician and lead a team of five efficient members. I diligently supervise the operations and ensure no technical errors disturb the company's digital systems. Recently, I became aware of the opening for the senior IT technician support position at the head office through the company website. Considering my work record and skills, I desire to be a part of the New York team as working at the main office will further assist me in upgrading my skills. Furthermore, it will also help me understand the complex nuances of dealing with hackers and illegal viruses that could negatively affect the company's functioning.

As for my current work responsibilities, I believe Miss Jenna would be a reliable person to lead the team. She has been assisting me these past years and is well-aware of every aspect in terms of department's work and technical handling. If my request is approved, I assure you that Miss Jenna will efficiently carry out the tasks on my behalf and I can always guide her in case any untoward situation arises.

I sincerely request you consider my request and assist me with the necessary arrangements for a smooth transition to the head office.

I am looking forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Sumanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate has successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the task prompt. The letter clearly explains the reason for wanting to work in the New York head office, specifically mentioning skill enhancement and gaining experience with handling digital security threats like hackers. Furthermore, the writer effectively addresses how current responsibilities will be managed during their absence by delegating the team leadership role to Miss Jenna. Lastly, the request for assistance with the transition arrangements is explicitly stated in the fourth paragraph. The tone is polite, professional, and appropriately formal for a business communication. The response is fully developed and accomplishes the communicative purpose well, aligning closely with the Band 8 descriptor for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing, each serving a distinct communicative function from stating the purpose of the letter to discussing work delegation and finally making the request. Cohesive devices such as 'Currently', 'Furthermore', 'As for my current work responsibilities', and 'If my request is approved' are used naturally and effectively to guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing throughout the letter is clear. Ideas progress smoothly from the initial proposal to the delegation plan and conclude with a call to action. This demonstrates a high level of control over cohesion and logical sequencing, earning a Band 8.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally precise range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace context. Phrases like 'diligently supervise', 'complex nuances', 'untoward situation', and 'smooth transition' show a good awareness of formal style and collocation. There are some minor limitations, such as the slightly repetitive use of 'request' ('express my interest', 'desire to be', 'sincerely request you consider my request'), but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey detailed professional ideas clearly, allowing the writer to achieve a solid Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('If my request is approved, I assure you that...') and relative clauses ('...that could negatively affect the company's functioning'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is handled well throughout the letter. Grammatical control is strong, with only minor slips that do not interfere with understanding. The structural variety and overall accuracy place this response comfortably in the Band 7 range.
