Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Ian,
I am writing to request you to transfer me in our head office, which is located in Montreal for six months.
As you know, I have been working as an accountant in your company since 2021. I am greatly grateful for you to offer me this opportunity to work with the professional and kind colleagues who always assisted me to be versatile and pragmatic in my work. Since my dream is to become Chartered Accountant, currently, I am planning to move Montreal to upgrade my accounting skills by learning how to manage the financial reports of all the branches and audite them appropriately.
I can understand, it would be hard to manage all the tasks alone by junior accountant. Nevertheless I already completed the previous year transactions and for the current year, probably around ten months are remaining. Therefore, he can handle the rest of the things. If he need any assistance, I will be available to support him.
However, it would be great if you would help me to find the accommodation because I have not anyone known there. While you said you have some acquaintances there. Would ask them if they can search the private room near to the main office.
Thankyou for considering your time and I would appreciate if you would arrange this opportunity of transfer.
Yours sincerely,
Sabeer

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully explain why you want to work in the Montreal head office, namely to upgrade your accounting skills and become a Chartered Accountant. You also describe how your work will be managed in your absence, explaining that the junior accountant can handle remaining tasks with your remote support. Finally, you ask for your manager's help in arranging the transfer and finding accommodation. The tone is appropriate for a workplace letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid score for task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing distinct points, and an appropriate sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate your reasons, work coverage plans, and personal requests. Cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'Therefore', and 'However' are employed to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'While you said you have some acquaintances there.' Referencing is generally clear, but occasional clunky transitions prevent this from reaching a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace context, including terms like 'accountant', 'financial reports', and 'opportunity of transfer'. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'versatile and pragmatic', though there are noticeable lexical and collocational errors. For instance, writing 'transfer me in our head office' should be 'transfer me to our head office', and 'audite them' should be 'audit them'. Additionally, 'have not anyone known there' is unnatural phrasing. These word choice and spelling errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score to a Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as conditional structures ('If he need any assistance...') and relative clauses ('...which is located in Montreal...'). However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies and punctuation slips, including 'If he need' (should be 'needs'), 'move Montreal' (should be 'move to Montreal'), and 'Thankyou for considering your time' (should be 'Thank you for your time'). Punctuation is occasionally faulty, particularly with commas around introductory phrases. These errors occur regularly but rarely impede the overall communication of your message.
