Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student covers all bullet points required by the task. The purpose of the letter is clearly established in the opening, and the reason for wanting to work in the Sydney head office is explained through the desire to learn more about research and development and develop professional skills. Furthermore, the writer addresses how work will be handled in her absence by mentioning a colleague, Krishna, who will take over the thesis and submit it. Finally, the letter asks for assistance in arranging the approval process by requesting the manager to refer her name. The tone is appropriate for a workplace communication, and all parts of the prompt are well-addressed, fulfilling the Band 7 criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a clear, logical structure with appropriate paragraphing. Each bullet point and thought is separated into distinct paragraphs, starting from the introduction of the idea to the reasons, delegation of work, and the final request for help. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Furthermore' and 'Since this branch'. However, there is some minor mechanical referencing, such as the abrupt transition between paragraphs regarding the handover and the ongoing project. Overall, the organization shows a clear logical progression throughout the response, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7 range well.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'headquarters', 'approval process', and 'ongoing project'. However, there are some inappropriate word choices and informal text-speak, such as 'to to let u know' in the opening sentence, which lowers the lexical score. There are also slight collocations issues like 'provide better outcome' instead of 'provide better outcomes' or 'achieve better results'. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands, placing it firmly at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using 'Since this branch is mainly focused on research and development, I would like to learn more about it...'. There are several grammatical and mechanical errors, including the double word 'to to', the text abbreviation 'u', and a lack of articles in phrases like 'fellow colleague Krishna'. Additionally, there is a run-on sentence in the third paragraph ('...and provide with the best expected results.I have also completed...'). Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, and the grammar demonstrates a fair level of control over basic and moderately complex structures, aligning with a Band 6.0.
