Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Mam,

My name is Manjeet Kaur. I have been working in your company for the last 2 years. I have learnt many aspects of the international market while working under this organisation. Now, I want to gain some more insight into working in an MNC by working in the head office. Moreover, I will learn to operate in different work environments and can observe business ethics while working with people from different backgrounds.

I have already finished my pending work and made my presentations for future projects, and my colleague gave me assurance that she will handle all situations when I will be away.

As you are the only one who can make it possible for me, I would request you to make all the necessary arrangement, to I can get a chance to join our head office for at least six month.

I would really appreciate it if you would consider my request as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Manjeet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all three bullet points required for this task. You explained your motivation to work in the head office by stating you want to gain insight into working in an MNC and observe business ethics in a new environment. You addressed how your work would be handled by mentioning that you finished pending work, prepared presentations, and arranged for a colleague to cover for you. Finally, you asked for the manager's help to arrange a six-month placement. Your purpose is clear throughout the letter, and the tone is appropriate for communication with a manager. However, the greeting 'Dear Sir/Mam' is slightly generic and contains a minor typo ('Mam' instead of 'Madam'). Overall, all core communicative requirements of General Training Task 1 are met effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a clear overall progression. It begins with an appropriate introductory statement of purpose, moves into the body paragraphs covering your reasons and work arrangements, and concludes with a polite sign-off. You make use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As you are the only one' to connect your ideas. Paragraphing is logical, separating the introduction, body points, and conclusion cleanly. However, referencing in sentences like 'make it possible for me' and 'make all the necessary arrangement, to I can get a chance' is slightly mechanical or awkward, which prevents the letter from reaching a higher band. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'international market', 'MNC', 'business ethics', and 'pending work'. Your choice of words allows you to communicate your message clearly to your manager. However, your vocabulary is somewhat standard and lacks flexibility or less common lexical items. There is also a notable vocabulary slip in your opening greeting ('Mam' instead of 'Madam' or 'Sir/Ma'am') and a typo in the third paragraph ('arrangement, to I can get' instead of 'arrangements so that I can get'). These minor errors do not impede communication, but they limit your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I have learnt many aspects of the international market while working under this organisation' and 'I would really appreciate it if you would consider my request as soon as possible.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present in the text, such as 'my colleague gave me assurance that she will handle all situations when I will be away' (tense inconsistency with 'will be away') and 'to I can get a chance' (incorrect preposition and conjunction). Despite these errors, the majority of your sentences are clear, and your punctuation is generally sound. These mistakes do not impede overall communication.
