Student answer (Band 5.5)

dear sam,

I am writing this letter in order to explain my will of working in the main office of our campany. As you know it been 4 years of me working in the same building , but now i would like to have a 6 month work trip to the main headquaters in USA. Mostlty everyone in here have their work trip but i get hired during the covid time so i didnot get a chance to finish my 6 month work trip.

If its possible may i have mine in january till june as it will be best for me to get trained by the speacialized team which is coming after christmas for revovation . I assured you that i will come back with great knowledge and experience which gonna help us to build more . Another reason for me to go over their is the 3 month work module . I heard that company provide 3 month advance level training which helps to get promotion. I am ready to submit all of my work before ends of year so i can give my name for the 6 month trip. I will take care that no obstacle comes due to my wish.

I am waiting for your answer . I hope you will take a look on my letter.

thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. They explain the motivation for the six-month work trip to the US head office, touching upon missed opportunities during COVID-19 and the desire for advanced training. They also address how work coverage will be managed by stating, 'I am ready to submit all of my work before ends of year so i can give my name for the 6 month trip,' and they explicitly ask for help by writing, 'If its possible may i have mine in january till june...'. The tone is appropriately semi-formal for a workplace letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. While some ideas like the renovation and training modules could be slightly more polished, the requirements are fully met, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard letter conventions with 'dear sam,' and a closing sign-off. However, paragraphing and logical progression show some weaknesses. The second paragraph is quite dense and attempts to cram multiple ideas—timing, training, coverage, and promotion—into a single block of text. Cohesive devices are occasionally repetitive or mechanical, such as 'Another reason for me to go over their...'. Referencing is generally understandable, but punctuation and paragraph breaks are inconsistently applied, which impacts readability. Overall, this aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their intentions clearly. There are attempts to use less common or topic-specific vocabulary such as 'headquarters', 'specialized', 'renovation', and 'module'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('campany' instead of company, 'Mostlty', 'speacialized', 'revovation', 'their' instead of there) and occasional awkward word choices ('explain my will of working', 'give my name for'). These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5, as accuracy is noticeably affected in multiple instances.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and dependent clauses (e.g., 'If its possible may i have mine in january till june as it will be best...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are numerous errors with capitalization (beginning of sentences and names), missing articles ('during the covid time', 'before ends of year'), and tense control ('it been 4 years', 'which gonna help'). Punctuation is also weak, particularly regarding missing apostrophes ('its', 'didnot'). Because errors are frequent throughout the text, though they rarely obscure the overall meaning, the performance fits the Band 5.0 descriptors.
