Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Max,
I am writing you to delibrate on working at head office which is located in Australia, for the next six months. I would like to work for an international company to seek noveltly.
As a company assistant manager, I would like to broaden my horizons, while working at head office. This approach is overwhelmingly imperative for our company growth because I could learn more skills and abilities, and try to figure out where we are lacking behind so that we can cover up for the upcoming projects.
I am going to stay overthere for the six months. I decided to work online for our company for the few hours but rest of the work will be looked by another person who is having sprinkle of experience. I would like recomend some names if you say so, I should start training them.
I would like to request you to arrange my business trip to Australia and accomodate me a place where I can stay for the six months. If it is possible, please make these arrangements as quickly you can because I have to look after various projects after coming back.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student has successfully covered all parts of the prompt. First, the writer explains the reason for wanting to work in the Australian head office, mentioning a desire to 'seek novelty' and 'broaden my horizons' to help company growth. Second, the response explains how work will be handled during the absence, stating 'I decided to work online for our company for the few hours but rest of the work will be looked by another person'. Third, the letter explicitly asks for help in arranging the trip and accommodation ('I would like to request you to arrange my business trip'). The tone is appropriate for a workplace request to a manager, and all bullet points are addressed with relevant ideas, placing this comfortably at Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the clarity of the purpose and well-extended points, a band score of 6.5 is well-earned.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a clear logical organization with appropriate paragraphing. Each paragraph corresponds to a specific point from the prompt, starting with the introduction and reason for the request, moving to work coverage, and concluding with the request for logistical arrangements. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First', 'As a company assistant manager', 'while working', and 'If it is possible'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as transitioning into the accommodation request alongside the travel arrangements. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately throughout the letter. Overall, the organizational structure is coherent and easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace context, using terms such as 'broaden my horizons', 'overwhelmingly imperative', and 'logistical arrangements' (implied). However, there are some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations. For example, the student writes 'delibrate on' instead of 'deliberate about' or 'discuss', 'seek noveltly' instead of 'novelty', and 'lacking behind' instead of 'lagging behind'. Furthermore, 'sprinkle of experience' is an unnatural collocation in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect some limitations in precision and word choice, justifying a band score of 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('If it is possible, please make these arrangements...') and participial phrases ('so that we can cover up...'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing patterns throughout the text. Examples include 'I am writing you to delibrate' (missing preposition 'to'), 'stay overthere for the six months' (article misuse and typo), 'the rest of the work will be looked by another person' (missing preposition 'after' or 'over'), and 'as quickly you can' (missing 'as'). Despite these frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation, the meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
