Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Max,

I am writing you to deliberate on working at head office which is located in Australia, for the next six months. I would like to work for an international company to seek novelty.

As a company assistant manager, I would like to broaden my horizons, while working at the head office. This approach is overwhelmingly imperative for our company's growth because I could learn more skills and abilities, and try to figure out where we are falling behind so that we can cover up for the upcoming projects.

I am going to stay overthere for six months. I decided to work online for our company for a few hours but rest of the work will looked after by the another person who has sprinkle of experience. I would like recommend some names if you say so I should start training them.

I would like to ask you to arrange my business trip to the Australia and accommodate me a place where I can stay for six months. If it is possible, please make these arrangements quickly as you can because I have to look after various projects after coming back.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, you explain your motivation to work in the Australian head office by stating you want to 'seek novelty' and 'broaden my horizons' to help the company's growth. Second, you address how your work will be handled in your absence, mentioning that you will work online part-time and leave other tasks to a colleague with some experience. Third, you explicitly ask for your manager's help in arranging the business trip and accommodation. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional workplace communication. While some ideas like the 'sprinkle of experience' are phrased a bit colloquially, all parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear, logical progression divided into distinct paragraphs that address specific aspects of the request. The opening states the purpose clearly, followed by the rationale, the coverage plan during absence, and finally the requests for arrangements. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'while working', 'so that', and 'If it is possible'. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'I am going to stay overthere for six months. I decided to work online...', where smoother linking words could enhance the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, contributing to an overall coherent arrangement that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with some flexibility and precision, using phrases like 'broaden my horizons' and 'overwhelmingly imperative'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations. For instance, 'deliberate on working' is not the most natural phrase for proposing an idea to a manager (suggesting a topic or discussing an opportunity would be more fitting). Additionally, 'overthere' is misspelled as one word, and 'sprinkle of experience' is an unusual collocation in a professional context. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate to communicate your intentions clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional clauses ('If it is possible, please make...') and subordinate clauses ('so that we can cover up...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text. In the opening sentence, 'I am writing you to deliberate' should be 'I am writing to you to discuss'. There are also missing articles and preposition issues, such as 'work online for our company for a few hours but rest of the work will looked after by the another person' (missing 'the' before rest, passive voice error 'will be looked after', and incorrect use of 'the another'). Furthermore, 'to the Australia' contains an unnecessary article. These errors occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band, though they rarely impede overall communication.
