Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Sharma,
I am writing to request your support for a six-month secondment to our head office in Berlin.
I have been working as a Senior Marketing Analyst in the Jamnagar office for the last three years, and I feel that spending time at the head office would be extremely beneficial for both my professional development and the company. Firstly, I would like to gain first-hand experience of how global campaigns are planned and coordinated. Secondly, working alongside the product development team would give me a much deeper understanding of our upcoming launches, which I could then apply to our regional strategy on my return. This opportunity would also allow me to build a stronger international network within the company.
I have already considered how my current responsibilities could be managed during my absence. My colleague, Priya Mehta, is familiar with all of my ongoing projects and has kindly agreed to cover my day-to-day tasks. For the quarterly market analysis report
Yours sincerely,
dharti patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all requirements of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain the reasons for wanting to work in the head office, such as gaining first-hand experience of global campaigns and building a stronger international network. You also outline how your responsibilities can be managed in your absence by mentioning your colleague Priya Mehta covering your daily tasks. Although the letter cuts off mid-sentence regarding the quarterly market analysis report, the bullet points of the prompt are addressed well enough to meet the expectations for this band. Your purpose for writing is immediately clear and sustained throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You utilise appropriate paragraphing to separate your introduction, your reasons for the request, and your coverage plan. Cohesive devices are used effectively to connect your ideas, such as 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to structure your professional goals, and 'I have already considered' to transition smoothly into the work coverage plan. Although the text ends abruptly with an incomplete sentence, the overall arrangement before that point is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with good awareness of professional style and collocation. Phrases such as 'secondment to our head office', 'professional development', 'first-hand experience', and 'regional strategy' show precise word choice appropriate for a business context. There are only occasional minor limitations, but your lexical control is generally strong and allows you to convey your message accurately and fluently without any communication breakdown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
You display a good variety of complex structures and maintain a high proportion of error-free sentences. Examples such as 'I feel that spending time at the head office would be extremely beneficial' and 'working alongside the product development team would give me a much deeper understanding' demonstrate solid command of grammar and punctuation. Control over verb tenses and clause structures is consistent, with no noticeable grammatical errors in the body of the text, aside from the incomplete ending.
