Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Patel,
I am writing to request my transfer as I look forward to working from company’s head office in Mumbai, India.
I am planning to assist my ageing parents starting from the November 2026 until April 2027. My family is based in Mumbai, which minimizes the commute time and allow more time with them. I have been living in Canada for the last two years, this opportunity will allow me to spend significant time with my parents.
Regarding my workload, my colleague Mr. Gandhi has agreed to take over my responsibilities. I will continue monitoring our teams progress on various projects. As a research analyst, I would be happy to help our team at any moment via phone or video call. A group chat has been created by me on the Slack application, which will help us for project tracking and communication.
It would be very helpful if you could you provide me a reference letter? Which I have to share with the director of research, Mr. Joshi in India. I would therfore request you to accept my transfer and schedule a meeting with our human resource manager, Mr. Naik, to facilitate a smooth transition. Should you require more details or information, I would be happy to assist further.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Raj Naik

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers all three bullet points thoroughly and appropriately for a general training letter. You clearly explain your motivation for wanting to work in the Mumbai office, which is to assist your ageing parents between November 2026 and April 2027. You address how your work will be managed by stating that Mr. Gandhi will take over responsibilities, and you outline your ongoing monitoring through Slack and phone calls. Finally, you successfully request your manager's help by asking for a reference letter and for assistance in scheduling a meeting with the HR manager, Mr. Naik. The tone is polite and professional throughout, fully appropriate for communicating with a manager. All parts of the prompt are well-developed and easy to follow, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with clear progression from the initial request to reasons, work coverage, and finally the call to action regarding the reference letter. Paragraphing is used effectively, with distinct paragraphs handling individual themes such as personal reasons, workload delegation, and administrative requests. Cohesive devices are used adequately, for instance, 'Regarding my workload' and 'Should you require more details'. However, there are minor cohesion flaws, such as the dangling phrase 'Which I have to share with the director of research' starting a new sentence fragment after a question mark. Despite this minor slip, the overall organisation is clear, logical, and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for workplace communication. Terms like 'ageing parents', 'research analyst', 'workload', and 'facilitate a smooth transition' show good control of business and personal contexts. There are occasional slight awkwardness or inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'request my transfer as I look forward to working from company's head office' (where 'a transfer' or 'to transfer to' would sound more natural) and 'minimize the commute time' (when referring to family proximity). However, these vocabulary issues do not impede understanding, and the range used is more than adequate to convey precise meanings.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As a research analyst, I would be happy to help our team at any moment via phone or video call.' There are several error-free sentences, demonstrating good control of grammar. However, a few errors persist, notably punctuation and sentence boundaries: 'Which I have to share with the director of research, Mr. Joshi in India' is a sentence fragment that breaks the flow following a question mark, and 'I would therfore request' contains a spelling error ('therefore'). Additionally, 'allow more time with them' lacks a clear subject verb agreement depending on the intended clause structure. Overall, grammar and punctuation are controlled well enough to ensure smooth communication.
