Student answer (Band 4.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to you to complain regarding the behavior of residents living next door to me in the room 306.
My name is Gurpreet Saini, and I have been living in one of your apartments in Cambridge for the past 2 years. I am paying my rent on time, and I am enjoying living here.
However, new tanets moved to the apartment last month, and they are causing major problems. Firstly, they play extremely loud music till late night which creates noise. Therefore, I am having trouble during sleeping, and it is also difficult for me to concentrate on my studies. In addition, they leave large garbage bags in the common hallway. This bad habit creates unpleasant smell, and attracts insects and bugs which is absolutely unsafe for us.
I would really appreciate, if you could send them a warning letter, because I tried talking to them politely but they ignored my request. I request you to make the apartment rules more strict, and put a fine for those residents who would not follow these regulations.
I hope you would consider this situation as a serious concern.
Kind regards,
Gurpreet Saini

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 1.0
The response fails to address the prompt provided. The task requires the student to write a letter to a manager explaining the desire to work in an international head office for six months, how work could be covered, and asking for assistance in arranging it. Instead, the student wrote a complaint letter to a landlord about noisy neighbors and garbage in the hallway. Because the content does not relate to the specific prompt given in the task instructions, it falls well below the requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Despite being completely off-topic for the prompt, the letter itself is structured logically with a clear beginning, middle, and end. The student uses standard letter-writing conventions and paragraphing effectively. Transitional markers such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Therefore' are employed to connect ideas and create a cohesive flow within the context of the complaint.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for communicating everyday problems, using terms like 'concentrate', 'unpleasant smell', and 'regulations'. However, there are a few lexical errors and typos, such as 'tanets' instead of 'tenants' and 'complaint regarding' used instead of 'complain regarding'. Despite these slips, the meaning remains clear throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would really appreciate, if you could send them a warning letter, because I tried talking to them politely...'. There are some grammatical and punctuation inaccuracies, including unnecessary commas and prepositions (e.g., 'in the room 306' instead of 'in room 306', and 'put a fine' instead of 'impose a fine'). However, these errors do not impede overall comprehension.
